Competency to Credential Model

The GenUS Competency to Credential Model provides a clear structure for students to practice, demonstrate, and be recognized for essential skills. Beginning with middle school Skill Builders, students engage in short, focused lessons that introduce foundational competencies. In high school, students can earn Micro-credentials, verified, competency-based certifications that require Evidence of Learning reviewed against clear rubrics. Multiple Micro-credentials can then be stacked into larger Credentials of Value, such as Job & Career Ready, Financial Literacy, or Leadership Development.

This model empowers students by validating their skills in ways that are portable, visible, and meaningful beyond the classroom. Each credential is awarded as a digital badge with embedded metadata, making it verifiable and shareable with postsecondary institutions and employers. These recognitions help students build language around their competencies, showcase achievements on professional platforms, and demonstrate readiness for both college and career pathways.

The GenUS Competency to Credential framework addresses what our students need and what families, schools, districts, and education nonprofits have been seeking: innovation and relevance. Aligned to national learning and essential competency standards, GenUS Skill Builders and Micro-credentials offer a scalable solution to braid competency-based learning with traditional academic instruction, providing students with the knowledge and skills valued in today's workforce and economy.
